Ask HN: Non-SMTP single server internal mail system?

Hi HN, I'm building a project that needs to have an "internal" mail system for users to communicate between each other on a website. It will never route to the outside world (think "messages" that you would send on a dating site). The scale is very small (less than 500 users). I'm sure that there must be a number of projects floating around on GitHub that fulfill this purpose. The best option at this point seems to be using something like phpBB and disabling all forums. Surely that is overkill for such a simple requirement?
